All You Need to Know About Camping in a Yurt

Camping with family members or friends can be so much fun. Being outdoors, enjoying nature, and getting away from the busyness of everyday life is refreshing, relaxing, and good for the soul. But if you dislike the inconvenience of having to set up and tear down your own tent and the discomfort of sleeping on rock-hard ground, then you will want to give yurt camping a try!

If you’ve heard the term “glamping,” or glamorous camping, that’s similar to what camping in a yurt is like. If you’re looking for things to do in Atlanta, renting a yurt at Stone Mountain Park is a great way to make family memories. You’ll be right in the heart of the Park, in close proximity to all the fun attractions and recreational activities, and you’re sure to have a great experience “glamping.” Yurt camping is a great way to get away and experience the pleasures of camping without all of the preparation work. Plus, you can ensure that you will not get rained out in the middle of the night.

To help you prepare for your upcoming yurt camping trip, below is a list of things you need to know.

The Ultimate Yurt Camping Checklist

Sleeping Accommodations

Although our yurt shelters do provide beds, you will most likely need sleeping bags, pillows, and/or linens. Many of our yurts have queen-sized beds plus futon beds or bunk beds, so you’ll need appropriate sleeping linens to ensure everyone is warm and comfortable.

Personal Items

Our yurts do not have bathrooms inside of them, so make sure you bring a flashlight for nighttime trips to the bathroom. You may also want to bring extra toilet paper just in case you need it. Each yurt is equipped with heating and air conditioning, electrical outlets, and ceiling fans, so be sure you remember your phone chargers and other personal items you may need to make your glamping experience a pleasurable one.

Lake Activities

If you plan on doing some type of water activity on your trip, you will need life preservers, sunscreen, and towels. You can fish right in Stone Mountain Lake, so packing fishing poles and bait is beneficial. It is also a good idea to look into the different types of bait you might need based on the types of fish in the lake.

Eating and Cooking

Bring plenty of water bottles and a cooler with food and snacks. You may also wish to bring a small refrigerator, as all yurts have electrical outlets inside them. Additionally, you will need wood, charcoal, and a lighter for the grill and fire pit, as well as plasticware and napkins for eating. If you plan on bringing your own propane stove and pots and pans, bring a sponge and dish soap for washing dishes as well. A percolator, which is another way to brew coffee over a fire pit, is always an extra bonus to have on hand in the morning.

Relaxing Outside

You may want to include extra outside lounge chairs on your packing list as well as a small travel table to set food or drinks on. It’s also fun to have board games or playing cards, and an extra portable table is useful for family games. Bug repellent is also a good idea so you can avoid getting bit by mosquitos while you are outside at dusk, as well as a light jacket for evenings since it can get cool even in the summer months.

Hiking and Trails

Many campgrounds have acres of hiking trails nearby. Even if there aren’t trails right near your yurt, Stone Mountain Park has many trails around that you can drive to if you’re up for a hike. If you have small children and plan on walking the trails or hiking, it may be helpful to take a simple stroller or a baby carrier for exploring the grounds. You may also wish to bring some bikes and helmets for a leisurely ride around the park.

Before you make your packing list, it is important that you research your camping site first so you know what to bring, what type of amenities are included, and how the camping area is set up so that you can be adequately prepared. Stone Mountain Park has much more to offer than just camping, like our numerous family-friendly attractions. Plus, as an added bonus, the campground site is on 3,200 acres of gorgeous scenery and includes an outdoor pool that is free to campers, a general store to get snacks, and on-site washers and dryers.

Finally, make sure you book your trip in advance, especially in the summer months, so that you can secure a spot before the campground fills up. If you want all the fun and relaxation of camping without the challenges of setting up camp, go yurt camping at Stone Mountain Park!
