Ride the Scenic Railroad

One of the most iconic attractions at Stone Mountain Park is the Scenic Railroad. This full-size locomotive is from the 1940s and has several open-air cars for passengers. The train travels five miles around the base of the mountain, allowing riders to take in the beautiful views for the entirety of the trip, which lasts around 25 to 35 minutes. Board the train at Marketplace Depot in Crossroads, where you can also get a list of departure times. Everyone in your party is sure to enjoy riding the Scenic Railroad at Stone Mountain!

Walk-Up the Mountain

As one of the Park’s most frequented activities, the walk-up trail that takes you to the top of the mountain leads to incredible views of Atlanta and the Appalachian Mountains. On a clear day, you can see 60 miles away! The top of the mountain is 1,686 feet above sea level and the walking trail is open from dawn until dusk. Too tired to walk back down after enjoying the views? Ride the Summit Skyride, a high-speed Swiss cable car, to get to the base of the mountain without the cardio. You can also take the Summit Skyride up the mountain in case anyone in your party isn’t up for the walking trail.

Two Eighteen-Hole Golf Courses

Stone Mountain Golf Club is one of Atlanta’s premier golf experiences. Two courses are located within the Park itself, giving you direct access to championship golf courses alongside scenic views. The Stonemont Course encourages players to be accurate and strategic. The Lakemont Course, on the other hand, is a little less of a challenge with a target-oriented layout. At the end of your round, stop by The Commons Restaurant for a beautiful view of the lake and mountain.

Fishing on Stone Mountain Lake

Cast your cares away when you fish on the Park’s 323-acre lake. Launch your own boat from the private boat ramp near the Evergreen Pavilion, and enjoy fishing for bass, carp, crappie, catfish, and bream all day long. Fishing is permitted from 6:00 AM to midnight, so take your time on the lake and enjoy all the views that Stone Mountain Lake has to offer.

You can bring your own RV or rent one right on-site with all the amenities included. We also have safari tent rentals, which are a step up from a traditional tent, but not quite as luxurious as a yurt. No matter what type of camping experience you desire, it’s available at Stone Mountain Park.

Picnics

Enjoy a family picnic at one of our two picnic areas: Triangle Picnic Area or Studdard Picnic Area. They are both in beautiful wooded areas, and grills and tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis. You can utilize our picnic areas for a quick lunch in between visiting attractions, or you can plan an entire day-long picnic, complete with picnic games and delicious grilled foods.

How to Survive a Trip to Stone Mountain Park with a Baby

Any outing with a baby in tow requires more planning and preparation than if you were to go alone or with only adults. However, Stone Mountain Park is a great place to enjoy the great outdoors with the whole family, little ones included! Since so many families with babies visit Stone Mountain Park on a regular basis, we’ve acquired some fantastic recommendations for how to make a trip to the Park easier and more enjoyable when you’ve got a baby on board.

So if you are looking for things to do in Atlanta, Georgia this weekend and will be bringing your little one along, keep reading for some ways to make your trip a little smoother for the whole family!

Bring or Rent a Stroller

The baby gear that you should bring along depends on what activities you have in mind for your visit. If you are scheduling a trip solely for the attractions, then a stroller will definitely come in handy. The paved forested paths make it easier to push a stroller throughout the park, as well as designated areas to park your stroller if the attraction cannot accommodate it.

We also have stroller rentals at the park if you happen to forget yours at home or are visiting on vacation. Or maybe you don’t have a ton of extra space in your car and would prefer to utilize the space for a cooler or extra snacks. Either way, you can find strollers for rent in the Main Ticket Plaza at the Adventure Center. They’re available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Don’t Forget Your Baby Carrier

If you are craving a walk along the trails or a climb up the mountain, we recommend a baby carrier, like a sling, front pack, or a hiking backpack. Many trails are too treacherous to push a stroller around.

If you are going to trek up the 1.1-mile trail to the top of the mountain wearing your baby, be aware that there are some steep areas as well as rocks and branches on the path. While on the trails, be sure to take extra precautions to keep both you and baby safe.

Throw the Essentials into the Diaper Bag

You can bring outside food into the park, so you can pack your baby-friendly food and your little one’s favorite snacks in your diaper bag. However, you also have the choices of some restaurants and pitstops throughout the park to buy soft foods suitable for your baby.

Also, be sure to pack items for the outdoors, like a hat and sunscreen in warmer weather. When the weather is cooler, bring diaper bag essentials like a sweater, hat, and blanket for your baby. Don’t forget a bottle, sippy cup, or extra water bottle for your little one so that hydration and thirst aren’t an issue while at the Park.

Scenic Railroad

Dinotorium

There are places on the lower level of the Dinotorium designed for younger tots and are mostly out of the way of flying balls. (Don’t worry, the balls are soft!) If your baby is mobile, they will enjoy crawling around in the tiny spaces and on some of the toys, and they are sure to love the brightly colored balls that they can play with.

SkyHike® Area

If you have older kids doing the ropes course inside SkyHike®, the sand area below is the ideal spot to keep your baby amused – only if you are not afraid of them getting sandy or a little wet. It is great for warmer days! Just make sure you bring a swim diaper and an extra change of clothes in case they get wet.

Geyser Towers

Although this is a netted play area meant for older kids, there are still spray fountains and little streams on the ground beneath Geyser Towers to keep babies preoccupied and cooled off in the Atlanta heat. Fishing on Stone Mountain Lake

Nothing says family memories like fishing together! When you need fun things to do in Atlanta with family at Stone Mountain Park, fishing at Stone Mountain should certainly sit atop that list! Launch your boat at the private boat ramp near the Evergreen Pavilion, and then cast your line on the Park’s 323-acre lake.

Fishing is permitted from early morning through midnight, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Stone Mountain Lake. The waters are home to bass, carp, crappie, catfish, and bream—perfect for anglers of all levels.

Private boats are welcome during daylight hours, as long as they use motors with 10 horsepower or less and follow all park safety regulations.

To fish at the park, you’ll need a valid Georgia fishing license and either a daily or annual parking pass. Please note that fishing is not allowed from bridges, docks, golf courses, or beach areas.

Family Hiking Trails Around Stone Mountain

Get all of the kids’ energy out by strolling around on one of the seven hiking and walking trails. With varying difficulty levels and different lengths, there are 15 miles of hiking trails in all across the Park, from a three-quarter-mile Nature Garden Trail to the 5-mile Cherokee Trail that encircles the entire mountain. Best Picnic Spots at Stone Mountain Park for Families

Plan your picnic at the Park at one of our two picnic spots. The Studdard Picnic Area is the largest public picnic area within the Park with around 200 tables and several public grills. The Triangle Picnic Area is closer to the Crossroads area of the Park, giving you quick access to so many fun things to do in Atlanta with family at Stone Mountain Park. Surrounded by lush greenery, these picnic areas are a hidden gem for a family meal. Tables and grills are available for use on a first-come, first-served basis.

If you have a toddler or two, you know that it can be hard to find things to do with toddlers that the whole family will enjoy, and it’s important to know what’s safe and kid-friendly. Geyser Towers

During the warmest weekends of the year, generally from March through November, toddlers and big kids alike can play in the spray! Kids over 32 inches can climb on suspended rope bridges and nets with adult supervision to get more access to gushing eruptions of cooling water. Kids of any age and height can play on the ground level in the trickling creek. In the cooler months, the water turns off, providing a dry, suspended playground.

SkyHike®

Our treetops course is one of the largest in the nation and is perfect for kids of all ages. The adventure course is a quarter of a mile long, with three different levels of adventure and challenges. Although kids must be 44 inches tall to climb on the big course that’s up above, there is a toddler play space on the ground where they can tackle toddler-size variations of the above obstacles. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult and wear closed-toe shoes.
