Muscogee Hiking Trail

Overview of the Muscogee Trail

Discover Muscogee Trail, one of the most secluded pathways at Stone Mountain, affectionately known as “The Trail Between the Lakes.” Before Europeans came to this area of Georgia, Stone Mountain was a gathering place and landmark for the Muscogee Creek Indians. In recognition of the indigenous people who once inhabited the lands surrounding Stone Mountain, this trail has been named in honor of the Muscogee Creek Indians.

The Muscogee Trail offers a unique experience as it takes you on a loop through a picturesque landscape of hardwoods. The trail offers a diverse terrain that caters to different preferences. Approximately half of the trail features a smooth and wide path, perfect for leisurely strolls and easy walking with your family and friends. This section allows for relaxed conversations, observation of wildlife, and enjoying the company of your loved ones amidst the serene surroundings.

The other half of the trail provides a more technical challenge as it winds along the water’s edge. This portion of the trail offers a closer connection with nature, with occasional changes in grade, roots crossing the path, and the presence of native granite. While still suitable for beginners, this section adds an element of excitement and adventure, making the hike engaging for both children and adults.

Throughout your journey on the Muscogee Trail, you’ll have the opportunity to engage in various activities. Birdwatching enthusiasts will be thrilled by the diverse avian species that call this area home. Keep your eyes peeled for colorful feathers, and listen to the melodic songs echoing through the trees. During the fall season, the trail comes alive with vibrant hues as the foliage transforms into a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and yellows. It’s a perfect time to capture memorable photos and appreciate the beauty of nature’s artwork.

Features

The return journey follows the lake’s edge, offering a more technical experience. This section of the trail features frequent grade changes, roots crossing the path, and an abundance of native granite. Muscogee Trail presents a beautiful hiking opportunity that is suitable for beginners and perfect for a relaxing afternoon stroll amidst the native stone and hardwoods. How to Prepare for Your Hike

Necessary Gear

When you embark on this family-friendly trail through the forest and along the shores of a lake, it’s important to have some essential gear with you. Dress in layers for weather-appropriate clothing and hiking boots or comfortable shoes with good traction. Plan to stay hydrated by carrying an adequate amount of water and pack some nutritious snacks for your hike. Other helpful gear to bring on a hike include sunscreen and insect repellent.

Safety Tips

While enjoying your family-friendly hike on the Muscogee Trail, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Stick to the marked trail to avoid getting lost or wandering into unsafe areas. Be mindful of your footing, especially if the trail has obstacles like rocks or roots. Take your time and watch out for slippery sections, especially when near the lake. If hiking with children, ensure they are always accompanied by adults. Remind them of basic trail etiquette, such as staying close, not wandering off, and respecting wildlife. While observing wildlife can be exciting, maintain a safe distance and do not feed or approach them. Respect their natural habitats and avoid any sudden movements that may startle them.

Weather Considerations

Before heading out, it’s crucial to consider the weather conditions. Look up the weather forecast for the day of your hike. Lasershow

The Lasershow will be back for a limited 4-night run!

The Lasershow will begin at 9:30 PM
August 30
August 31
September 1
September 6

Admission to the Lasershow is FREE!

The Lasershow Spectacular debuted in 1983 on the world’s largest screen, the 825-foot-tall granite outcropping.

Innovative when the show launched, the lasers, over time, began to look elementary. In 2011, Mountainvision was launched employing state-of-the-art digital video projection to give the show 3-D-like effects without the need for 3-D glasses. Video opened up a dramatic difference and allowed for new options that the lasers weren’t capable of. Mountainvision can do things like, turn Stone Mountain into a Volcano spewing lava down its sides or the rock crumble right before your eyes. The projection is five times the size of an IMAX screen and taller than the Statue of Liberty! It’s like watching a 5,500-inch high definition TV.

Did The Lasershow Go Away?

After 40 years of illuminating the night sky and delighting audiences of all ages, the iconic Lasershow at Stone Mountain Park has been shelved. This beloved tradition has been a staple in Atlanta, captivating millions of visitors from around the world with its stunning visuals and breathtaking displays. With the show being outdated and in need of a revamp Stone Mountain Park has decided to bid farewell to the Lasershow and replace it with a state-of-the-art production that is bigger, brighter, and more breathtaking than ever. The Lasershow does reappear periodically.

Is There A New Show?

Stone Mountain Park invested in new Light Show technology in 2023 that offers a way to produce imagery not available with the classic Lasershow.

The new summer show boasts ten times more lumens, ten times larger video projection, and ten times more laser beams than the classic Lasershow. Featuring the latest in digital video technology, sound, and lighting, the Light Show will dazzle with its vibrant colors and dynamic animations. Using state-of-the-art projectors and a combination of 3D mapping techniques, this high-definition show is the most visually stunning production yet.

The Music Across America Light Show is bigger, brighter, and more breathtaking than ever with completely immersive lighting, cutting-edge surround sound, more fireworks, lasers and flame effects, new music tracks, and a Drone Show with 250 color-changing drones synchronized to music. The show creates a magnificent display of light and sound that will transport you to another world.

This updated technology gives the flexibility to offer different shows throughout the year including during Lunar New Year, Dino Fest, Latino Family Festival, Pumpkin Festival, and Stone Mountain Christmas Light Shows. The catalog of light shows is expected to double from six to twelve over the next two years. And of course, the classic Lasershow will remain part of the catalog of light shows and reappear periodically.

Will The Classic Lasershow Come Back?

Stone Mountain Park brought an ALL-NEW Summer Light Show to the park. We also know many people have fond and nostalgic memories of the classic Lasershow Spectacular.  The classic Lasershow will remain part of the catalog of light shows and will reappear periodically.

This trail spans approximately one mile and offers a moderate yet rewarding hike with an elevation gain of about 700 feet. As you make your way up, you’ll notice a consistent incline throughout the trail, with slightly steeper sections closer to the top. To ensure you stay on track, the trail is clearly marked with yellow blazes painted on the stone.

Throughout your hike, you’ll be treated to glimpses of the surrounding natural splendor. The trail offers picturesque glimpses of the Atlanta skyline, showcasing the city’s towering buildings against the backdrop of the expansive sky. The sight of Stone Mountain Lake adds a touch of serenity to the landscape, as its tranquil waters mirror the surrounding beauty.

Two 18-Hole Golf Courses

Enjoy 36 Holes of Championship Golf!

Located in one of the most popular attractions in Georgia, Stone Mountain Park, just minutes from downtown Atlanta, Stone Mountain Golf Club features two championship golf courses and offers scenic views of historic Stone Mountain and Stone Mountain Lake.

What makes Stone Mountain Golf Club such a remarkable experience is the unique personalities of its two courses. The Stonemont Course is a classic challenge that places emphasis on accuracy and strategic course management. The Lakemont Course complements Stonemont with a less demanding, target-oriented layout and exquisite views of Stone Mountain and the surrounding lake.

Stonemont Course
Designed and built in 1969 by the renowned Robert Trent Jones Sr., this masterpiece has offered a pure test of golf from all tees since its inception. The Stonemont Course at Stone Mountain Golf Club has played host to numerous national, professional events as well as Georgia amateur championships.

The Stonemont Course is laid out over gently rolling and cantered fairways of premier Bermuda grass and greens of immaculate bent grass. The par 70 layout stretches 6,863 yards, and is challenging with its narrow fairways, strategically placed bunkers and numerous stands of Georgia pines.

Lakemont Course
Georgia native John LaFoy designed the Lakemont Course at Stone Mountain Golf Club. It features incredible views of Stone Mountain and the lake.

The front 9 holes of the Lakemont Course wind around Stone Mountain Lake, with six holes having water in play. The back 9 offers beautiful holes with rock outcroppings and four holes where water comes into play. LaFoy’s penchant for mounding and dramatic bunkering is evident throughout the course. The dramatic elevation changes offer a unique ambiance that appeals to every golfer.

Other Features and Amenities
The Commons is not only home to the golf pro shop, but also to a full-service restaurant and two meeting/banquet rooms. The Commons Restaurant offers lunch and dinner, as well as a Sunday brunch. Stroll out onto the veranda for dramatic views of Stone Mountain Lake and the number one fairway of the Lakemont course; or relax in our lounge after a full day of golf.

The location is also an excellent choice for small meetings. Our banquet facilities can accommodate up to 150 guests for business or pleasure, and we are always available for any size corporate or group golf tournaments and outings.
