What to Expect at Stone Mountain Highland Games

Since 1972, the picturesque grounds of the Stone Mountain Park meadow have been filled with the sound of bagpipes, fiddles, and harps during the third weekend in October. Thousands of Scots and those who wish to be ‘Scot for the Day’ from around the world will don their family tartans and gather just a short drive northeast of Atlanta, Georgia to participate in the festivities.

One of the premier Scottish festivals in the United States, Stone Mountain Highland Games features colorful pipe bands, Scottish Athletics, piping and drumming competitions, Highland dancers competing before judges of worldwide renown, country dancing, Scottish harping, and fiddling. Scottish foods and drinks, clan tents and vendors selling lovely goods imported from the British Isles, and Celtic performers are also a part of this traditional gathering. Here’s what to expect during this weekend full of culture and fun!

Competitions

In the old times, the clans would gather for “Games”. These would commonly be in the form of competitions between the clans.

The Highland Heavies

Arguably the most iconic of the competitive “Games”, Highland Athletes will take their field and spend two full days competing in many of the traditional athletic events. These include The Hammer Throw, The Weight Throw and Weight Toss, The Stone of Strength (featuring a little piece of Stone Mountain), The Sheaf Toss, and The Caber Toss.

Dancing

Dancers of all ages from throughout the United States and Canada will take their turn on our special dance stages vying for those coveted prizes awarded for the best performance. Both days will feature the traditional “Highland” dances as well as several Scottish National dances.

Pipe Bands

If you like to see the Pipe Bands, then Saturday afternoon is the time! Stone Mountain Highland Games features one of the largest fields of competitive bands in the Southeast. Owing to our strategic placement at the end of the competitive season for the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association, it is typical to see 30 pipe bands from around the country take over the main parade field for an all-afternoon competition.

Fiddling

The Stone Mountain Highland Games is pleased to bring a Scottish Fiddling Competition to the Games. This year, they will offer a Junior and Novice competition with plans to expand in the future. The competition will take place at the Fiddle Tent on Saturday.

Children’s Activities

The Wee Laddies and Lassies area is a place where kids can enjoy event-wide educational activities! Children’s activities, crafts, entertainment, and athletics are conveniently labeled and located together in a new and expanded area to give them the weekend of their lives. Scottish athletic events for children allows them to participate in kid-sized traditional Scottish athletic activities. There are a wide variety of Scottish-themed fun activities including the Haggis Hurl, Brave™ Archery Shooting Range, the Sheep Toss, Scottish Salmon Fishing Challenge, Scotch Egg Drop, and the St. Andrew’s Golf Challenge. The Scottish-themed crafts include DIY sporrans, Loch Ness Monster sock puppets, beaded necklaces and bracelets, swords and shields, sand art, canvas crafts, and coloring pages. This is also where you will find face painting!

Exhibits

Scottish and Celtic culture is as rich and varied as its people. Interests range from the practical day to day living of agricultural work to the sheer joy of dancing. Spread around the field, guests are encouraged to observe, learn, and participate in many of the cultural exhibits!

Scottish Country Dancing

Scottish Country Dancing is the traditional ballroom and barn dancing of Scotland. Performed round the room or in longwise or square sets, one can see the intricate patterns of the dance unfold as the dancers step in time to the elegance and strength of the Strathspey, or the energy and agility of the jigs and reels, displayed as the couples progress through the dance.

Tartan Forest

Located just behind the Country Dance platform is a veritable forest of Tartans, Clan and family crests, and heritage. The St. Andrews Society of Atlanta tends and nurtures this forest of wool so others can see, experience, and explore the world that is wrapped in a Tartan.

Falconry

Throughout the ages the fascination of a working alliance between man and hawk has never lost its appeal. The grandest birds were reserved for Kings and Emperors as only they could afford the time and money necessary to train and maintain them, but lesser hawks of all descriptions were kept by humbler folk to help keep their Larders filled.

Scottish Spinning and Weaving

Spinning and weaving were essential skills in 18th century highlander life. Cold, wet weather necessitated that highlanders understand how to raise sheep, process wool and fabricate the fibers into wearable and warm items. Demonstrators will show you how it’s done and what the finished products look like. Today, spinning and weaving are skills done for pleasure and artistic design rather than necessity.

Music

Variety is the key to the musical offerings you will experience while at Stone Mountain Highland Games. Their music committee volunteers work hard to provide a widely varied offering of top-notch musical acts to the festival stages. With three stages located throughout the grounds, there will be plenty of music for every taste.

Stage 1 houses contemporary music groups. Here the power and up-tempo beat of contemporary music wed to Celtic themes and instrumentation can be found.

Stage 2 offers a more powerful musical offering fusing traditional offerings with contemporary themes and instruments.

Stage 3 features traditional acoustic music.

Shopping

The Highland Games evolved from the annual gathering of the people at the end of the harvest. Farmers would bring their produce to sell and merchants would bring goods and wares for the farmers to buy. Stone Mountain Highland Games is proud to continue that tradition with a large selection and some of the finest vendors and artisans of Scottish and Celtic items in the United States. Visitors can enjoy browsing through the vendors and artisans’ tents to find that perfect item for a gift for someone special or to add to your Celtic collection.

Admission

Single-day tickets are available for purchase online or on-park. You will also need a daily or annual parking pass to enter Stone Mountain Park.

Stone Mountain Highland Games takes place on the third weekend of October each year. This special celebration is sure to be one you won’t forget!

Why You Should Visit Our Atlanta Craft Festival

Looking for fun things to do in Atlanta? Experiencing Stone Mountain Park’s Yellow Daisy Festival is a great way to appreciate the arts while supporting local businesses and enjoying the outdoors. You can also spend time with loved ones while browsing unique items to bring home or purchase as a gift. Yellow Daisy Festival is free to attend and has been named one of the nation’s top arts and crafts shows. We love to celebrate all the talent that we see in our vendors year after year! Here is why you should plan a trip to this Atlanta craft festival in September:

Support Small Businesses And Economy

Buying from small, local businesses is one of the top reasons to check out a craft show like the Yellow Daisy Festival. Unlike big businesses, smaller, locally-owned businesses are more inclined to put their profit back into the economy within the community. Small business owners are also more likely to buy local to contribute to their inventory, so you’re helping them support local companies, too.

Additionally, buying from local business owners and small business owners makes shopping a more personable experience. Your transaction gives you the opportunity to interact directly with who you are buying from, unlike chain stores. And normally, when you do business with someone first-hand, it makes for a more satisfying customer service experience.

Find A Rare Treasure

Craft festivals are where creativity comes alive and are filled with vendors from a variety of fields, like pottery, painting, sculpting, and photography. The Yellow Daisy Festival at Stone Mountain is the largest in the Southeast and features over 400 artists and crafters. With the wide assortment of handmade pieces of jewelry, artisanal pottery, gorgeous paintings, and home decor that are showcased, you will be sure to find the perfect gift or an item to bring home for yourself. Some vendors can even customize your piece, making it more personal and exactly how you want it. A custom item is memorable and meaningful, which is something you can’t find at retail stores.

Enjoy A Family-Friendly Event

Attending Yellow Daisy Festival is not only an inexpensive way to spend quality time together with friends or family members, but it offers something exciting for everyone. There is so much more to do at Yellow Daisy Festival than just shopping, such as food, live music, and games for all ages.

Stone Mountain Park’s Yellow Daisy Festival

At Stone Mountain Park, we host unique, local vendors each year at our iconic craft festival. Not only do we love supporting small local businesses, but we are proud to serve as the stepping-off point to creating memories for family and friends that attend every year.

Yellow Daisy Festival dates back to 1968 and what started as a small arts and crafts show has grown into a four-day, action-packed event. In fact, it has won multiple awards, including the following:

  • A top arts & crafts show in the U.S. by Sunshine Artist Magazine
  • A Southeast Tourism Society Top 20 Event
  • Winner of multiple awards by the Southeast Festival and Events Association

Last year, we added a Vintage Village to the festival. If you’re into vintage finds and farmhouse chic, you’ll want to peruse your way through this specially curated section to see what strikes your fancy.

You’re bound to make memories and discover items you love at this Atlanta craft festival. Be sure to visit for Yellow Daisy Festival, September 7 – 10. You may just make it a tradition for years to come!

4 Exciting Recreational Activities at Stone Mountain Park

If you are looking for outdoor recreational activities and tranquility that only nature can offer, head to Stone Mountain Park. It’s the perfect local destination to escape the hustle of everyday life. With so many Atlanta attractions right here at the park, you can take on fun and energizing activities while relaxing in wooded surroundings.

Here are our top 5 recreational activities that we’re sure you’ll love.

Hiking Trails

Take in the beauty of nature on one of our many hiking trails. You have the option to walk, jog, or bike on most of these trails. Plus, they vary in terrain, length, and difficulty, so there is something for everyone.

For breathtaking and widespread views, get moving for a 1.1-mile trek up the mountain. The trail can be rocky and steep in some areas, so make sure you are prepared and have adequate footwear. The best time to go is in the early morning to watch the sunrise or later in the evening for a stunning sunset.

For a leisurely stroll around the mountain, the Cherokee Loop Trail is a 5-mile trail through an oak-hickory woodland with sights of the lake, some great views, and a close-up encounter with nature.

Fishing in Stone Mountain Lake

When you go out on the water on our peaceful 323-acre lake, you will have a different view of the natural surroundings and can watch wildlife from a unique perspective. Fishing is allowed from 6 am until midnight, and our lake is full of five types of fish: bass, carp, catfish, bream, and crappie. We sell bait in the General Store in the campground area or you’re welcome to bring your own.

Private boats are allowed on the lake and must be launched from the public boat ramp near the Evergreen Pavilion.

Golfing

On our two championship golf courses, you have access to plenty of open space and picturesque views. The Lakemont Course is a less challenging course that loops around the tranquil lake. The Stonemont Course is more vigorous due to the tight fairways. No matter your skill level or which course you choose to golf, you’re sure to enjoy your time outdoors and the relaxing recreation at Stone Mountain.

Camping

Set out on a memorable adventure at our campground where you are not limited to regular pop-up tent camping! We have a variety of camping options to suit your preference so you can make your camping experience exactly what you want it to be.

For a more glamorous experience, check out our wood-and-canvas yurts that have furniture and can fit up to five campers. Or rent one of our Safari Tents that come with beds and are already set up for you!

Want a more traditional camping experience? Don’t worry – we have 46 primitive tent sites to choose from, or you can bring your RV and camp at one of our RV rental sites. All You Need to Know About Camping in a Yurt

Camping with family members or friends can be so much fun. Being outdoors, enjoying nature, and getting away from the busyness of everyday life is refreshing, relaxing, and good for the soul. But if you dislike the inconvenience of having to set up and tear down your own tent and the discomfort of sleeping on rock-hard ground, then you will want to give yurt camping a try!

If you’ve heard the term “glamping,” or glamorous camping, that’s similar to what camping in a yurt is like. If you’re looking for things to do in Atlanta, renting a yurt at Stone Mountain Park is a great way to make family memories. You’ll be right in the heart of the Park, in close proximity to all the fun attractions and recreational activities, and you’re sure to have a great experience “glamping.” Yurt camping is a great way to get away and experience the pleasures of camping without all of the preparation work. Plus, you can ensure that you will not get rained out in the middle of the night.

To help you prepare for your upcoming yurt camping trip, below is a list of things you need to know.

The Ultimate Yurt Camping Checklist

Sleeping Accommodations

Although our yurt shelters do provide beds, you will most likely need sleeping bags, pillows, and/or linens. Many of our yurts have queen-sized beds plus futon beds or bunk beds, so you’ll need appropriate sleeping linens to ensure everyone is warm and comfortable.

Personal Items

Our yurts do not have bathrooms inside of them, so make sure you bring a flashlight for nighttime trips to the bathroom. You may also want to bring extra toilet paper just in case you need it. Each yurt is equipped with heating and air conditioning, electrical outlets, and ceiling fans, so be sure you remember your phone chargers and other personal items you may need to make your glamping experience a pleasurable one.

Lake Activities

If you plan on doing some type of water activity on your trip, you will need life preservers, sunscreen, and towels. You can fish right in Stone Mountain Lake, so packing fishing poles and bait is beneficial. It is also a good idea to look into the different types of bait you might need based on the types of fish in the lake.

Eating and Cooking

Bring plenty of water bottles and a cooler with food and snacks. You may also wish to bring a small refrigerator, as all yurts have electrical outlets inside them. Additionally, you will need wood, charcoal, and a lighter for the grill and fire pit, as well as plasticware and napkins for eating. If you plan on bringing your own propane stove and pots and pans, bring a sponge and dish soap for washing dishes as well. A percolator, which is another way to brew coffee over a fire pit, is always an extra bonus to have on hand in the morning.

Relaxing Outside

You may want to include extra outside lounge chairs on your packing list as well as a small travel table to set food or drinks on. It’s also fun to have board games or playing cards, and an extra portable table is useful for family games. Bug repellent is also a good idea so you can avoid getting bit by mosquitos while you are outside at dusk, as well as a light jacket for evenings since it can get cool even in the summer months.

Hiking and Trails

Many campgrounds have acres of hiking trails nearby. Even if there aren’t trails right near your yurt, Stone Mountain Park has many trails around that you can drive to if you’re up for a hike. If you have small children and plan on walking the trails or hiking, it may be helpful to take a simple stroller or a baby carrier for exploring the grounds. You may also wish to bring some bikes and helmets for a leisurely ride around the park.

Before you make your packing list, it is important that you research your camping site first so you know what to bring, what type of amenities are included, and how the camping area is set up so that you can be adequately prepared. Stone Mountain Park has much more to offer than just camping, like our numerous family-friendly attractions. Plus, as an added bonus, the campground site is on 3,200 acres of gorgeous scenery and includes an outdoor pool that is free to campers, a general store to get snacks, and on-site washers and dryers.

Finally, make sure you book your trip in advance, especially in the summer months, so that you can secure a spot before the campground fills up. If you want all the fun and relaxation of camping without the challenges of setting up camp, go yurt camping at Stone Mountain Park!

Fun Ideas and Games for Stone Mountain Camping Trips

Camping is not only a time to explore nature, but it is also a time to get away from social media and electronics, in general. When you’re looking for things to do in Atlanta, look in your own backyard, or our backyard, rather. To help you and your family put your devices aside for your next camping trip at Stone Mountain Park, we’ve comprised a list of fun games to initiate family bonding time! We’ve included the rules of each game so you can get started as soon as you get to the park.

Wiffle Ball

This game, similar to baseball, can be played with between 2 and 10 players. Each team will have a pitcher, who tosses the Wiffle ball to the batter. When the batter gets a hit, he or she runs the bases, just like in baseball, getting as far as possible without getting tagged out.
Unlike baseball, players are not allowed to steal bases, and you only get out if you are struck out or if your hit is caught. The team who scores the most after six innings wins! A Wiffle ball set, along with base markers, can be found at the General Store. This game is great for families and individuals of all ages and skill levels, from the tiniest toddlers to the matriarch and patriarch of the family!

Horseshoe

Stone Mountain Campground has a horseshoe court set up on the campgrounds, and all you need to do is show up to play! You usually play with 2 to 4 players, or you can have a few teams of two. Usually, players stand between 27 to 37 feet away from the stake, but you can be closer if you are playing with younger children or aren’t an experienced horseshoe player. The first player throws two horseshoes, one after the other. The goal is to try to ring or hook the horseshoe to the stake at the opposite side, which equals 3 points. You can also score one point for horseshoes that lean on the stake or come within six inches of the stake. When you are scoring, if your opponent scores a ringer on top of yours, the points cancel each other out, and no points are gained. The team or player who scores 40 points first wins!

Kickball

This game is suitable for larger families or with a group of people. This game is also similar to baseball. The field is set up in a diamond shape with four plates or bases. You need both a catcher and a pitcher, as well as some infielders and outfielders when playing. When kicking a pitch, the ball has to touch home plate before it’s kicked. The teams will switch places, from fielding to kicking and vice versa, after three outs. Game rules state to play six innings, but you can play as few or as many as you’d like. Whoever scores the most wins!

Frisbee or Frisbee Golf

Frisbee only needs a few players and you can toss the disc to one another. Or you can mix it up by playing Frisbee Golf and get some marked baskets to use as the “holes.” Like golf, the goal is to take the smallest number of attempts to toss the frisbee in the basket. Whoever scores the fewest number of points wins.

Volleyball

This classic game is also suitable for a larger group camping together. Each team has a total of up to six players. Preferably, three team members will play in the back and three will play in the front. The first team serves the volleyball and the opposite team is allowed three hits to get it back over the net. The teams keep passing it over to one another until it touches the ground or goes out of bounds. The team keeps serving until they miss the ball and then it switches servers to the other team. Generally, the person in the back right corner will serve, but you may need to be flexible with this depending on the age and capability of those who are playing. Points can only be made by the serving team, and whoever reaches 25 points first wins.

Spoons

This simple but incredibly fun game just needs a deck of cards and some spoons. Each player is dealt four cards. Place the spoons in the center of the playing area. If six people are playing, you want to have five spoons so that someone will not get a spoon and be out.

The first player draws a card, discards it to the left, and then each player picks up the discard on the right. This continues until someone gets four of a kind. Then, that player tries to secretly pick up one spoon. As soon as the person takes the spoon, all the other players want to do the same. Whoever does not get a spoon is out. Continue playing until there is a winner!

Scavenger Hunt

Comprise a list of items to find at the park. Items can be simple like a pinecone or a leaf, or they can be harder to find like a worm or a four-leaf clover. Things to Do for Free in Atlanta at Stone Mountain Park

Atlanta is home to endless fun, but a lot of it comes at a cost. Whether you’re looking for an entire day of fun or just a meal out at a restaurant, the expenses can quickly add up. In fact, things to do for free in Atlanta can be hard to come by.

Thankfully, at Stone Mountain Park, you can see and do numerous activities for free. Once you’re inside the park, adventure awaits! Below are our favorite free activities to do inside the park.

History & Nature

Hiking, Biking, and Walking Trails

Embedded in the 3,200-acre greenery are the park’s many nature trails. Whether you want to walk, jog, or bike, there are many trails to choose from. These diverse trails differ by terrain, length, and difficulty, so there’s something for everyone!

One of the most-loved hiking trails at Stone Mountain Park is the 1.1-mile journey up to the top of the mountain. If you don’t take in Atlanta’s views on this historic landmark, did you even go to Stone Mountain? Try to make the trek either early in the morning or right around dusk for an Instagram-worthy sunrise or sunset, and to beat the heat during the warm Georgia summers.

If you’re looking for a less intense hike, consider taking a leisurely stroll around the mountain. Follow the 5-mile Cherokee Loop Trail to explore the park’s stunning oak-hickory woodland and lake views.

Songbird Habitat and Nature Trail

Created for the 1996 Olympics archery and cycling competition, the Songbird Habitat and Nature Trail is now home to a variety of songbirds. This area is located on the backside of the mountain and consists of two separate 1-mile trails: the Field Trail and the Woods Trail. For no cost at all, not only can you see a spot used for the 1996 Olympics, but you can also learn about numerous birds and hike through beautiful woodlands.

Fishing on Stone Mountain Lake

Bring your own boat or find a seat dockside on the park’s 323-acre lake. Five types of fish call this lake home, so cast a line and wait for the perfect catch.

As the largest lake in the park, it spans nearly half the mountain and even has islands dispersed throughout. As you cruise through the lake, you’ll love spotting historic sites like the 732-bell Carillon and the century-old Grist Mill – all for free. You’ll also get some killer views of the mountain and surrounding area that are only accessible from the water.

Historic Education

Become a local history buff for free by touring the park with the SMP Historic Pass app. You can listen to the audio clips and drive around to the various sites discussed for a self-guided tour.

If you don’t want a guided experience, you can visit The Historical and Environmental Educational Center. You’ll learn fascinating facts about geology, ecology, and the park’s history. With interactive exhibits, classrooms, and a small theater, the 5,400 square foot Center brings education to life all at no cost.

Plan a homeschool field trip or educational activity for the kids this year to educate them on the rich history of the mountain and the importance of historical preservation.

Sightsee Historic Landmarks

Stone Mountain Park has multiple historic landmarks you can visit and read about for free.

  • The Grist Mill | Built in the 1800s, this century-old mill was relocated in 1965 from its original home in Ellijay, Georgia. You can park right across from the attraction, then walk around it to learn more.
  • Carillon | Each day, this 732-bell carillon plays a beautiful concert for all of the park to hear. It was showcased at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City, and then donated to the park by Coca-Cola. For over 30 years, Mabel Sharp has played this stunning and ginormous instrument for the park. You’ll find convenient parking near this landmark so you can walk right up to it.
  • Quarry Exhibit | Did you know that almost every U.S. state has a building made from granite that came from Stone Mountain? You’ll learn facts like this at this exhibit that uncovers the captivating history of the granite industry and its role in creating Stone Mountain.
  • Washington W. King Bridge | Built in 1891, this historic bridge was actually constructed in Athens, Georgia. It originally connected College Street to downtown Athens, going over the Oconee River. In 1965, it was carefully de-constructed and rebuilt at the park.

These are just a few facts about each of the historic landmarks that are dispersed throughout the park. You’ll have to visit each of them to learn more about their fascinating history, but thankfully you won’t have to pay anything for these fun things to do for free in Atlanta!

Picnicking

Want to have a memorable meal without spending a pretty penny? Pack up a picnic from home and then find one of the many lakeside picnic tables for a meal to remember. Public grills, tables, and restrooms are all available to make your outing more enjoyable.

If you have kids ranging in age, you can let them play in their own designated spaces; there are separate playgrounds for older and younger children. You’ll find slides, rock walls, a mini ropes course, and more at the Children’s Playground at Stone Mountain Park.

Yellow Daisy Festival

Mark your calendar for the weekend after Labor Day. You can “shop ‘til you drop” at the annual Yellow Daisy Festival – named by Sunshine Artist Magazine as one of the nation’s top arts & crafts shows!

This award-winning festival draws in hundreds of artists, crafters, jewelers, woodworkers, musicians, and more. The best part is that the festival is free with a parking pass! However, you’ll want to bring your cash or plastic because you’re sure to walk away with dozens of one-of-a-kind gifts and items. The event starts every day at 9:00 AM, and closes at 5:00 PM daily.

At Stone Mountain Park, you don’t have to spend a great deal of money to have a memorable experience! Use this list as a bucket list of things to do in Atlanta for free and get ready to check off your list during your next visit to Georgia’s most-visited attraction!

It’s the sweetest place to have meaningful conversations and make memories together.

Romantic Getaway

Couples can choose the perfect spot for a getaway between the two properties within the park. Book your weekend at The Inn at Stone Mountain Park for a historic and cozy feel. If you want a resort-style getaway, The Atlanta Evergreen Lakeside Resort is the hotel for you. Either way, you’re guaranteed a romantic time, right in the midst of 3,200 acres of lush greenery where you and your partner can unwind.

Go Camping (or Glamping)

Forget about dinner and a movie. Stone Mountain Camping is the ultimate romantic date night idea! This unconventional night out can be as glamorous or “old school” as you’d like since the park’s campgrounds have tent spots available as well as yurts to rent. Pack up an easy dinner, count the stars, and toast s’mores at the campfire alongside your sweetheart.

Get Active

Sharing a few miles together – whether biking, walking, or jogging – can foster great conversations and improve your relationship. At Stone Mountain Park, you can get active side-by-side while conquering the 5-mile loop around the mountain. There are dedicated bike lanes and paved roadways so you can enjoy your miles together safely. Just be sure to pick a pace that is comfortable for both of you and gives you the opportunity to talk along the way.

Be A Kid Again

Who says attractions are just for kids? Go back to the fun dates when you were dating and spend an evening playing mini-golf, encouraging each other with playful competition. Or get adventurous with SkyHike and put your ropes course skills to the test! Challenge each other at new heights and have a blast at playful, fun attractions at Stone Mountain Park. Check out which attractions are open right now and unleash your inner child together!

Become History Buffs Together

Learning together as a couple is a great bonding activity. Be your own tour guide when you download the new SMP Historic Pass App. The two of you can venture around the park in a guided but independent way, while learning all about the historic landmarks across the park. You set the pace, so you can stop for a romantic picnic or for a few selfies whenever you please.

Complete A Scavenger Hunt

There’s something romantic about exploring new areas and finding things together. Even if you’ve never been to the park, you can create a generic outdoor scavenger hunt and check items off together. You might include things like animal tracks, a historic landmark sign, or an item a visitor accidentally left behind.

If you want to make it exclusive to Stone Mountain Park’s features and activities, consider scouring the website first to build your list. Either way, you and your partner will have a blast finding things together or challenging each other to complete the scavenger hunt faster than your partner!

Go Geocaching

Don’t want to create your own scavenger hunt? Download a Geocaching app and find other people’s hidden items all throughout the park.

Put together by fellow Geocachers, caches are weatherproofed boxes hidden all over the world and include items like a logbook, little trinkets, and more. They’re typically hidden under a rock or out of plain sight so non-Geocachers don’t stumble upon them.

No matter how you go “hunting”—the old fashion way or via Geocaching – this is a thrilling date idea that is sure to provide a great date night!

Romantic Dinner On The Lake

Although dinner is a typical date night idea, the environment of the park is what makes it especially romantic. On a beautiful evening, The Commons Restaurant has the perfect spot for an outdoor dinner date: the patio. Overlooking Stone Mountain Lake with the Carillon in the distance, the two of you will enjoy delicious, handcrafted, southern dishes alongside the tranquility of the lake.

If the idea of a dinner date night feels cliché, then bring your own meal and find one of the many designated picnic areas in the park. Take in views of the lake with no interruptions from other diners or servers. It’s less expensive and a little more informal, but it can easily be just as romantic.

Go To A Festival Or Event

Try new foods, see new sites, and buy new items at one of the many festivals or events at the park. Check the park’s schedule, and choose from a variety of events like the Yellow Daisy FestivalPumpkin Festival or Stone Mountain Christmas, to name a few. Walking hand-in-hand, the two of you will make memories that you’ll cherish for years to come.

Fishing On The Lake

Talk about a one-of-a-kind, true Southern date! You’re never too old to cast a line, engage in great conversations, and wait for the perfect catch. Stone Mountain Lake has five types of fish available to catch and multiple docks to choose from. Whether you hang your feet over one of the docks or bring your own boat, fishing as a couple is an intimate, peaceful bonding experience.

Are you looking for things to do in Atlanta for couples and ready to take your partner on a one-of-a-kind date? Use one of these exciting ideas for an incredibly memorable date at Stone Mountain Park.

Stone Mountain Park’s Exciting Role in the 1996 Olympics

With all the changes that took place during 2020, one of the biggest ones was the postponement of the 2020 Olympics. Thankfully, the 2020 Olympic Games were moved to 2021, and the world still got to enjoy all the highest levels of athleticism and competition in Tokyo. We thought this would be the perfect time to reflect on our park’s exciting role in the Atlanta Olympics!

In 1996, Atlanta had the honor of hosting the 100th annual Olympic Games. Our hometown city won the bid against six other cities, including Athens, Greece. It is arguably one of the greatest events to happen in our state, especially because it brought over 2 million people to the capital. It was an extensive undertaking and took almost six years and an estimated $3 billion in preparations.

Olympic organizers not only used established buildings for hosting events, but they also set up new structures to host the various Olympic events. Today, Stone Mountain Park is known as an Atlanta tourist attraction, but it actually played a crucial role in accommodating sports competitions in 1996.

Atlanta’s Olympic Velodrome

This unique, state-of-the-art Velodrome track was strategically fashioned for cycling for the Olympic Games. Cyclists from around the world raced for gold in this innovative space that stretched 250 meters. In fact, two world records were set during these Games! The 75-ton steel Velodrome was constructed in what is now known as the Songbird Habitat within Stone Mountain Park.

Ironically, the track did not have a trial run before assembly. It was ingeniously created by Mathematica, a technical computing system that used algebraic techniques to formulate all 20,000 pieces of welded steel. The structure contained 236 parts that snapped together and apart easily. However, it was disassembled after the Games and was rebuilt in Quebec, Canada for use inside a national training center.

Tennis Center

The Tennis Center was constructed specifically for the Olympics. It was located off Bermuda Road in Stone Mountain. It took over $20 million to build and had over 12,000 seats for the Games. The center was renovated later to seat 7,200 with 15 courts. Tennis players Andre Agassi and Lindsay Davenport each won gold for the United States at this historic spot.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan for the Tennis Center to become a leading tennis site after the Olympics. Although the center later hosted other events, such as a concert in 2005 with Robert Flack and Melbor Morre, it mostly remained vacant. Sadly, the Tennis Center was officially closed in 2007 because it was beyond repair. An official ceremony for demolition was held on August 1, 2017.

Archery in the Songbird Trail

Did you know that the archery competition for the 1996 Olympics took place in our very own Songbird Habitat Trail? There were a total of 64 archers competing in our park. Archery first appeared in the games in 1900 but was removed after the 1920 Games, until being reinstated in 1972. The archery competitions were at a range of about 229 feet (70 meters).

Although the trail was cleared for the games, pine trees were planted after the Olympics to restore the trail’s natural state, making it a great hike and one of our favorites. The Songbird Trail is off of Stonewall Jackson Drive inside the park. On this one-mile hike on the former archery and cyclist site, you can spot local birds like the white-breasted nuthatch and northern cardinal.

Summit Skyride and the Olympic Torch

Today, the Summit Skyride is one of the leading attractions at Stone Mountain Park. You can view the mountain up close and see the city of Atlanta from the top of the mountain. From the cable car, you can get a breathtaking view of the scenery of the Appalachian Mountains as you soar 825 feet up the mountain.

Summit Skyride had a famous moment during the 1996 Olympics. Our beloved cable car carried the Olympic Torch to the summit! In light of the exciting occasion, the cable car and top of the mountain complex both received an upgrade. The torch was transported to the top of the mountain and then went to downtown Atlanta for the opening ceremonies, where it was lit by Muhammad Ali.

Beyond the famous 1996 Olympics, Stone Mountain Park is chock full of historic moments. Be sure to visit Memorial Hall to learn more about the park’s history.

The Summer Babysitter’s Guide to Stone Mountain Park

Spending hours with little ones is fun, but it can be hard to get creative with entertaining them. So, why not turn a typical summer babysitting job into an adventure?

At Stone Mountain Park, we have exciting things to do in Atlanta to keep the kids entertained so you won’t have to. Keep reading for all the tools and tricks for a memorable trip to Stone Mountain Park that you, the kids, and their parents will all be thrilled with.

Preparation

If you have a daily Attractions Ticket, you can explore all of the exclusive activities the park has to offer! Be sure to check the calendar before heading to the park to see which attractions are open. Also, check the weather since some rides close if there are strong winds or stormy weather.

It will also be helpful to measure the kids before going to the park so they know which attractions they can go on in advance. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes, a stroller if you have little ones, and a backpack for the essentials, like sunscreen, snacks, and water.

Upon entering the Park, you will pay for parking. To access attractions, you’ll need to purchase an Attractions Ticket for each child and yourself. Once inside, designate a meeting spot just in case someone gets separated. Also, point out Stone Mountain Park staff members to smaller kids so they will know who to go to in case they get lost.

Once you’ve worked through the logistics and safety measures of the trip, start enjoying some of the most fun things to do in Atlanta with your little buddies.

SkyHike

SkyHike® is an exhilarating activity for kids who are 44 inches and taller. The course is ideal for an adventurous child who is not afraid of heights. The three different levels are 12-foot, 24-foot, and 40-feet up in the air, so bravery is a must and adventurous fun is guaranteed!

Kids need closed-toed shoes for the ropes course, and some kids on the smaller end may need some assistance on SkyHike®.

Geyser Splash Pad

When you plan your trip in the summer months, you can experience the water-soaked, Geyser Splash Pad. Kids get drenched, and you can rest comfortably in the shade and watch them have fun.

You’ll want to pack bathing suits and towels or an extra change of clothes for this attraction.

Finally, kids must be taller than 32 inches to enter. There are some areas for smaller kids to enjoy the water, too, however. Swimming diapers will come in handy (and are required) for guests who are not potty trained.

Other Exciting Kid-Friendly Attractions

Inside the 4D Theater is an exciting show that’s sure to get the whole group giggling. However, it can be a little intense for smaller viewers, so use your best judgment when deciding if your crew can handle it.

The Summit Skyride is a high-speed Swiss cable car that ascends the top of Stone Mountain. Perfect for all ages, this attraction leads to a spectacular view. Kids will love looking out the windows as they traverse up the mountain from up high, and you’ll all enjoy seeing Atlanta from the top of the mountain.

Dinosaur Explore is an incredible outdoor adventure where kids can see true-to-size dinosaurs, some of which even move and roar! They’ll love learning about these giant creatures at the Paleontology tents, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to take some pictures to send to Mom and Dad.

Scenic Railroad is an enjoyable journey around the mountain and is perfect for guests of every age. Feel the wind cool you down as you ride on the train around the base of Stone Mountain, and enjoy looking at the plants and animals in their local habitats.

Where to Eat

Whether you’ve got a group of adventurous eaters or the pickiest bunch out there, we have you covered! Stone Mountain Park has multiple restaurants and cafés with all of the kids’ favorite foods, like pizza and fried chicken. There are numerous tasty options to choose from, like Marketplace and Campfire Smokehouse, which are located in the Crossroads area close to most of the attractions.

Need a morning or afternoon pick-me-up? We also have Basecamp Café offering Starbucks coffee to keep you energized while keeping up with the kids. If you prefer to bring your own food into the park, there are various wooded picnic areas to enjoy the scenery and take a break in the shade.

Other Activities

With a parking pass, you have access to other activities inside the park that do not require an Attractions Ticket. For example, there is a shaded playground area past the walk-up trail, and there are miles of hiking trails to investigate. One trail to conquer is the 1.1-mile path up the mountain. It is not too strenuous but can be steep in parts, so bring a baby carrier for the little ones since you cannot use strollers on the trail.

If you have older kids with you and plan on staying late, the all-new Music Across America Drone & Light Show, presented by the Georgia Office of Highway Safety, is an engaging show that starts at 9:30 and is about 45 minutes in length. Bring lounge chairs or a blanket so you can sit back and relax while enjoying the show. For an elevated experience, snack terrace seating is also available to purchase.

With Stone Mountain Park, you can plan an entire day of festivities for the kids you’re babysitting! It’s sure to make everyone happy, from you to the kids to their parents. Plan your visit now and enjoy the many things to do in Atlanta with kids by venturing to the park for your next babysitting job!

Safari tents contain a queen size bed, two camping mats, and a table and chairs, all on a wooden platform. Although our safari tents sleep up to two adults and two children, you may want to bring a pack-and-play or a blow-up mattress for extra sleeping spots. The tents also come with a fan and lamp, as well as electrical outlets and a water spigot.

Yurt Camping

Ever heard of glamping? It’s glamorous camping – for people who prefer to have a little more luxury while camping but still desire an outdoorsy feel. Stone Mountain Park’s version of glamping involves our yurts. These are made of wood and canvas, and they come with quite a few amenities:

  • Beds and furniture
  • Heating and air conditioning
  • Ceiling fan
  • Electrical outlets
  • Four large windows

The yurts sleep up to five guests, but you will need to bring linens along with personal items and a cooler. Keep in mind that our yurts do not have bathrooms inside, but they are within walking distance of the restroom facilities.

RV Sites

Our RV sites are perfect for people passing through the city with their own recreational vehicle or for those with an RV who are simply looking to unplug and unwind for a few days without having to travel a long distance. Our sites have private decks with gas grills, and the nearby General Store is stocked with many camping necessities. If you run out of anything or forget to pack an essential item, the store has products to meet most of your camping needs and to make sure your RV camping experience is a great one.

RV Rentals

If you don’t have your own RV, another camping alternative is Stone Mountain Park RV rentals. Each RV includes two TVs with cable, air conditioning and heat, and a bathroom with a shower and tub. For your convenience, there is also a mini kitchen with a stovetop, oven, refrigerator, and microwave. With Stone Mountain Park RV rentals, you can still have the best of both worlds: enjoy a serene view of the lake and be surrounded by acres of hiking trails, but without having to sacrifice basic commodities and comfort. The RVs sleep between 4 and 6 people, but you will need to bring your own bed linens and cooking supplies.

Campground Amenities

The campground area at Stone Mountain Park is huge, but no matter what type of camping you enjoy, you’ll enjoy a wide variety of campground amenities. There is a refreshing swimming pool for warm, sunny days, as well as several fun outdoor activities like the Horseshoe Court, Sand Volleyball Court, and a children’s playground area.

Additionally, there are other campground amenities offered while you are making family memories. For starters, there is a laundry facility, which is perfect for RVers that are hopping from city to city. For your convenience, the campground sites also include grills, picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, and showers, and select spots also include free Wi-Fi & cable television.

While in the park, you have the choice to explore the hiking trails, ride your bikes, or go fishing. There are also many attractions at Stone Mountain Park that you can access with the purchase of Attractions Tickets.

How to Survive a Trip to Stone Mountain Park with a Baby

Any outing with a baby in tow requires more planning and preparation than if you were to go alone or with only adults. However, Stone Mountain Park is a great place to enjoy the great outdoors with the whole family, little ones included! Since so many families with babies visit Stone Mountain Park on a regular basis, we’ve acquired some fantastic recommendations for how to make a trip to the Park easier and more enjoyable when you’ve got a baby on board.

So if you are looking for things to do in Atlanta, Georgia this weekend and will be bringing your little one along, keep reading for some ways to make your trip a little smoother for the whole family!

Bring or Rent a Stroller

The baby gear that you should bring along depends on what activities you have in mind for your visit. If you are scheduling a trip solely for the attractions, then a stroller will definitely come in handy. The paved forested paths make it easier to push a stroller throughout the park, as well as designated areas to park your stroller if the attraction cannot accommodate it.

We also have stroller rentals at the park if you happen to forget yours at home or are visiting on vacation. Or maybe you don’t have a ton of extra space in your car and would prefer to utilize the space for a cooler or extra snacks. Either way, you can find strollers for rent in the Main Ticket Plaza at the Adventure Center. They’re available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Don’t Forget Your Baby Carrier

If you are craving a walk along the trails or a climb up the mountain, we recommend a baby carrier, like a sling, front pack, or a hiking backpack. Many trails are too treacherous to push a stroller around.

If you are going to trek up the 1.1-mile trail to the top of the mountain wearing your baby, be aware that there are some steep areas as well as rocks and branches on the path. While on the trails, be sure to take extra precautions to keep both you and baby safe.

Throw the Essentials into the Diaper Bag

You can bring outside food into the park, so you can pack your baby-friendly food and your little one’s favorite snacks in your diaper bag. However, you also have the choices of some restaurants and pitstops throughout the park to buy soft foods suitable for your baby.

Also, be sure to pack items for the outdoors, like a hat and sunscreen in warmer weather. When the weather is cooler, bring diaper bag essentials like a sweater, hat, and blanket for your baby. Don’t forget a bottle, sippy cup, or extra water bottle for your little one so that hydration and thirst aren’t an issue while at the Park.

Attractions for a Baby

Admission into the park for babies two and under is always free, and they can even participate in some of the fun! Plus, the park setup makes it as easy as possible for parents. There are changing tables in most bathrooms, benches to sit down and rest with baby, and covered areas to take a break in the shade. Additionally, check out these top attractions that your little ones are sure to enjoy.

Scenic Railroad

A train ride on the Scenic Railroad is a perfect attraction to keep baby entertained as you take in all of the sights and sounds on a five-mile journey around the park. It’s also optimal for parents to sit down, rest, and take a break from all of the walking.

Dinotorium

There are places on the lower level of the Dinotorium designed for younger tots and are mostly out of the way of flying balls. (Don’t worry, the balls are soft!) If your baby is mobile, they will enjoy crawling around in the tiny spaces and on some of the toys, and they are sure to love the brightly colored balls that they can play with.

SkyHike® Area

If you have older kids doing the ropes course inside SkyHike®, the sand area below is the ideal spot to keep your baby amused – only if you are not afraid of them getting sandy or a little wet. It is great for warmer days! Just make sure you bring a swim diaper and an extra change of clothes in case they get wet.

Geyser Towers

Although this is a netted play area meant for older kids, there are still spray fountains and little streams on the ground beneath Geyser Towers to keep babies preoccupied and cooled off in the Atlanta heat. Packing a swim diaper and a change of clothes will be useful for your baby’s exploration in this water attraction.

With a little planning and preparation, taking a trip to Stone Mountain Park with a baby can be a pleasurable experience for the entire family! Be sure to check out our calendar of events and our Park Attractions schedules before heading to the park so you can make the most of every moment that you’re here!

A Geologist’s Dream: The Rock Behind Stone Mountain Park

Stone Mountain Park is every geologist’s dream due to its prehistoric history and is one of Georgia’s most popular places to visit. Children visit on school field trips to learn more about the rock behind Stone Mountain Park and its importance to the state of Georgia. Stone Mountain Park features 3,200 acres of preserved natural land, including oak and hickory forests, rocky terrain, lakes, streams, and waterfalls. In the center of it all stands Stone Mountain itself, which is what the park and the nearby city of Stone Mountain are named after. Stone Mountain has an elevation of more than 1,600 feet, and when you reach the summit, you will take in panoramic views that include the Atlanta skyline and the Appalachian Mountains.

Stone Mountain Is Made of More Than Granite

Many visitors to Stone Mountain are surprised to learn that this stunning dome is actually a large piece of granite. In fact, Stone Mountain is the largest piece of exposed granite in the world! Granite is an igneous rock that was formed millions of years ago in the magma near the Earth’s core. In fact, geologists have determined that the dome of Stone Mountain formed more than 300 million years ago, along with the formation of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains.

As magma welled up below the Earth’s crust, it formed these large granite pieces that now make up the most well-known mountain ranges in the southeastern United States. As the magma cooled, it created this igneous rock with unique texture and composition. Stone Mountain is known as an inselberg or monadnock, which refers to a small mountain or rock hill that rose abruptly from an otherwise level surrounding area. That makes Stone Mountain Park particularly unique because it features relatively flat plains of forests, lakes, and lawns with a stunning dome in the center.

Rocks and Minerals Found at Stone Mountain Park

Stone Mountain is primarily known for its granite composition, though it is also comprised of quartz monzonite, and granodiorite. When you see a rock made of granite, you notice it has stark veins and granules are larger in size. Quartz monzonite is also lighter in color like granite and has a grainy, highly detailed composition. From afar, Stone Mountain looks solid gray, but when you get up close, you are able to see the exquisite detail of this incredible rock formation. A wide variety of minerals can be found in the rock at Stone Mountain Park, including quartz, microcline, and muscovite.

Natural and Geological History of Stone Mountain

Many visitors to Stone Mountain Park are surprised to realize just how many forests and trees surround the area and also occur on this rock dome. The lower slopes of Stone Mountain are home to Georgia oaks and pines, while the top of the mountain features a more bare rock landscape with rock pools. The summit of Stone Mountain is 1,686 feet above sea level and offers amazing views of the North Georgia Mountains and even downtown Atlanta. Visitors to Stone Mountain Park can get an up-close look at the composition of Stone Mountain by taking the Walk-Up Trail to the summit and back down! This trail is one mile long, and you will walk right up the mountain, passing rock formations, rock pools, indigenous trees, and views of forest all around. Visitors interested in a more challenging adventure will also appreciate the five-mile Cherokee Trail around the base of Stone Mountain with a dirt tread path and some steep sections as you actually hike up and over the west side of the mountain. This five-mile trail features views of Stone Mountain, lakes, streams, and forests full of oak and hickory.

Geologists and history buffs can learn more about the rock behind Stone Mountain and its history at the Quarry Exhibit at Stone Mountain Park. This exhibit and the many miles of trails inside Stone Mountain Park are free with your daily or annual parking pass.
